In this little
autobiographical tale, a puppy tells the story of his life, the
people, dogs and horses he meets. But more importantly, he tells us
his love for his little English master, whose beloved father is often
travelling. When he’s at home, with his son, he tells all sorts
of fascinating stories near the chimney fire. The descriptions are
full of nostalgia, hidden confessions from a man who has been torn apart
from his childhood and origins. In this book, we find the horses of
the Hungarian putsza, a tzigane orchestra, which evoke our artist’s
love for his country. For this book is, above all, a portrait of Hungary
the way he remembered it : the villagers, such as the teacher or the
Italian barber who gives dancing lessons during his spare time, and the
big cities where the aristocrats live according to the protocol. The
drawings show varied humanized portraits of the little dog. From this book on, Imre Hofbauer started representing human relationships through animals : dogs, horses, and monkeys. |
